Things look bleak in first Alice Through the Looking Glass trailer

While the first Alice in Wonderland movie from director Tim Burton may have fallen a little flat with critics, the film made a ton of money. So, a sequel was inevitable, and we’ve finally been given a first trailer and a handful of character posters for Alice Through the Looking Glass. The movie looks to be full of color, even without Burton behind the wheel, and plenty of characters pop in to let us know they’re still around. What I found most interesting about this one (revealed in the synopsis after the jump) is that some new characters are being introduced that aren’t part of the original material. That’s always a gamble, so we’ll see if new faces will add a little fuel to the franchise. If it does well, we’ll surely see a final film to round out a trilogy.

What do you think? Johnny Depp looks to be hamming it up once again, and Sacha Baron Cohen is entertaining in just about anything, so this could be entertaining on some levels. If anything, maybe remaking these kinds of properties will bring younger generations around to the source material and early versions, which would be great. Only time will tell how much of the original book will go into the sequel.

If the trailer didn’t tell you enough, here’s an official plot synopsis that’s more credits than it is synopsis, but it does tell us we’ll see familiar faces and that Disney has introduced a new characters to this world:

In Disney’s “Alice Through the Looking Glass,” an all-new spectacular adventure featuring the unforgettable characters from Lewis Carroll’s beloved stories, Alice returns to the whimsical world of Underland and travels back in time to save the Mad Hatter. Directed by James Bobin, who brings his own unique vision to the spectacular world Tim Burton created on screen in 2010 with “Alice in Wonderland,” the film is written by Linda Woolverton based on characters created by Lewis Carroll and produced by Joe Roth, Suzanne Todd and Jennifer Todd and Tim Burton with John G. Scotti serving as executive producer. “Alice Through the Looking Glass” reunites the all-star cast from the worldwide blockbuster phenomenon, including: Johnny Depp, Anne Hathaway, Mia Wasikowska and Helena Bonham Carter along with the voices of Alan Rickman, Stephen Fry, Michael Sheen and Timothy Spall. We are also introduced to several new characters: Zanik Hightopp (Rhys Ifans), the Mad Hatter’s father and Time himself (Sacha Baron Cohen), a peculiar creature who is part human, part clock.

Alice Through the Looking Glass is scheduled to hit theaters on May 27, 2015.
