First Assassin’s Creed trailer previews the video game movie adaptation

The long-awaited, highly anticipated video game adaptation hope of a movie Assassin’s Creed starring Michael Fassbender finally has a first trailer for us to ogle. Admittedly, I’m not a die-hard Assassin’s Creed fan, but I’ve definitely been watching this movie evolve. Fans and critics alike have been holding their breath and crossing their fingers that the Assassin’s Creed movie will be our first great video game adaptation film, which is a lot to ask for. There’s not much confidence instilled from past game-to-movie attempts, but this year (with both this and Warcraft) could be the one to turn things around.

Watch the first trailer, read a plot synopsis, and check out the poster for Assassin’s Creed after the jump.

There’s a lot of hate going around online regarding the use of the Kanye West song in the trailer. Personally, I don’t love or hate its use, but there almost certainly had to be something better out there to tag onto our first good look at Assassin’s Creed. Not a great way to sell the movie to the fans, but hey, we’ll have to wait and watch before we can really pass judgement. I’m excited to see the past/present settings and Fassbender running, jumping, and fighting with those iconic Assassin’s Creed weapons.

What do you think? Does the first trailer do it for you? If you’re looking for more insight, definitely check out the recent Collider interview with Michael Fassbender.

Here’s the official plot synopsis for the Assassin’s Creed movie:

Assassin’s Creed follows a character by the name of Callum Lynch who, through a revolutionary technology that unlocks his genetic memories, is able to experience the adventures of his ancestor, Aguilar, in 15th Century Spain. Callum discovers he is descended from a mysterious secret society, the Assassins, and amasses incredible knowledge and skills to take on the oppressive and powerful Templar organization in the present day.

Assassin’s Creed reunites Michael Fassbender and Marion Cotillard (who starred together in the recent Macbeth adaptation), and we’ll also see Michael K. Williams, Jeremy IronsBrendan Gleeson, Brian Gleeson, and Callum Turner in the film. The movie is directed by Justin Kurzel (Macbeth, The Snowtown Murders), and Assassin’s Creed hits theaters on December 21, 2016.
