Jake Gyllenhaal and other A-list actors climb Everest in first trailer

The first trailer for Everest, the upcoming man-vs-nature adrenaline rush of a true story re-telling, promises a visceral climb up and down the infamous mountain. The cast alone, which includes Jake Gyllenhaal, Josh Brolin, and Jason Clarke among other familiar faces, is worth the ticket price, but the story being told is one worth seeing on the big screen. Add to that the opportunity to experience Everest in IMAX, and the movie becomes a must-see for film fans later this fall.

Watch the excellent first trailer for Everest, read a plot synopsis for the film, and check out a poster after the jump.

I’m not ashamed to admit my love for Vertical Limit, and the Everest trailer makes that movie feel like a cartoon by comparison. There’s an intriguing edge and an atmosphere on display that looks promising, and I’m a big fan of almost everyone in the star-studded cast. Gyllenhaal is sure to get a lot of the attention, with this and his upcoming movie Southpaw making waves already, but its the ensemble adventure and inevitable “who’s going to die” anxiety that has me excited for Everest.

Admittedly, I knew very little about the movie until recently. If you’re in the same boat or consider yourself curious, here’s a plot synopsis for Everest to fill you in.

Inspired by the incredible events surrounding an attempt to reach the summit of the world’s highest mountain, Everest documents the awe-inspiring journey of two different expeditions challenged beyond their limits by one of the fiercest snowstorms ever encountered by mankind. Their mettle tested by the harshest elements found on the planet, the climbers will face nearly impossible obstacles as a lifelong obsession becomes a breathtaking struggle for survival.

Everest stars Jake Gyllenhaal, Jason Clarke, Josh Brolin, Keira Knightley, Sam Worthington, Robin Wright, John Hawkes, Emily Watson, Elizabeth Debicki, Martin Henderson, Vanessa Kirby, and Michael Kelly. The movie was directed by Baltasar Kormakur (2 Guns, Contraband) and is scheduled to hit theaters on September 18, 2015.
