GODS OF EGYPT trailer and posters hint at a wild fictional interpretation of Egyptian myth

Gods of Egypt trailer and character posters are pretty outrageous

When the first posters for Gods of Egypt popped up a few days ago, the media wasn’t sure what to make of how flamboyant and strange they were. I’ll admit, I wasn’t even aware of the project until those posters made their waves, and now a trailer for the movie helps solidify the oddness of what’s to come. Gods of Egypt looks like something akin to Immortals in its unashamed bending and stretching of ancient mythology, and I’m a sucker for swords and sandals fantasy adventure films, so I’m optimistic. The cast is strong enough to spark some curiosity, but what’s more curious is director Alex Proyas (Knowing, I, Robot, Dark City) being involved. If anything, the trailer teases a colorful romp through some wild Egyptian fiction.

Gods of Egypt looks like it could be fun, and I was more on board early in the trailer when it was just Gerard Butler and Nikolaj Coster-Waldau establishing some backstory. Then, what I’m going to guess are the two young leads showed their faces, and I was a little more apprehensive with an, “Oh, so it’s one of those movies” reaction. I’m hoping this isn’t a teen-fueled love story backdropped by lots of CGI and a buried Egyptian lore story that could have been better, but it wouldn’t surprise me if that’s exactly what it is. Fingers crossed for something engrossing and entertaining.

The trailer was pretty telling, but here’s an official plot synopsis for Gods of Egypt to fill us in:

Magic, monsters, gods and madness reign throughout the palaces and pyramids of the Nile River Valley in this action-adventure inspired by the classic mythology of Egypt. With the survival of mankind hanging in the balance, an unexpected hero takes a thrilling journey to save the world and rescue his true love.
