Gyllenhaal continues his dramatic downward spiral in Nightcrawler trailer

Not long ago, Jake Gyllenhaal snuck under the radar with a taught, intriguing picture called Enemy, and the actor looks to be continuing down that dark rabbit hole with a new film Nightcrawler. The first full-length trailer has surfaced, and it’s as disturbing as it is captivating. Bits and pieces of the plot are revealed in subtle ways in the trailer, which builds a nice tension as it churns along. Buy that ticket, Jake, buy that ticket.

Watch the first trailer for Nightcrawler after the jump.

For someone who dabbled in leading man action blockbuster territory with Prince of Persia, it’s great to see Gyllenhaal continuing with some out-of-the-box pictures that seem to keep his Donnie Darko spark burning. The dude’s definitely gotten a little gaunter for this role, as seen in the trailer, and it looks like he’s digging deep into some dark territory for this one.

Here’s an official plot synopsis for Nightcrawler:

NIGHTCRAWLER is a pulse-pounding thriller set in the nocturnal underbelly of contemporary Los Angeles.  Jake Gyllenhaal stars as Lou Bloom, a driven young man desperate for work who discovers the high-speed world of L.A. crime journalism.  Finding a group of freelance camera crews who film crashes, fires, murder and other mayhem, Lou muscles into the cut-throat, dangerous realm of nightcrawling — where each police siren wail equals a possible windfall and victims are converted into dollars and cents.  Aided by Rene Russo as Nina, a veteran of the blood-sport that is local TV news, Lou thrives.  In the breakneck, ceaseless search for footage, he becomes the star of his own story.

Nightcrawler stars Jake Gyllenhaal, Bill Paxton, Rene Russo, and Riz Ahmed. It’s premiering at the TIFF in September and is  scheduled for theatrical release on October 17, 2014.
