Joy trailer sees Jennifer Lawrence unraveling amid friends and family

The first trailer for Joy, the third film from David O. Russell that stars both Jennifer Lawrence and Bradley Cooper, surfaced a while back, and I’m just now getting around to posting it up. I used to love Russell’s films, but he’s fallen from the horse in recent years (in my opinion). Joy looks like an interesting story of one woman’s slow unraveling as she gets older, and the trailer is a curious one, to say the least. There are definitely flairs of Russell’s style on display here and there, and the Christmas-time setting and music accompaniment make for a fun pairing.

Watch the trailer for Joy and read a plot synopsis for the film after the jump.

Again, I was a huge fan of David O. Russell back in his Three Kings/I Heart Huckabees days. The Fighter was pretty solid, but Warrior kind of blew it away. Nowadays, Russell seems to be focusing more on somberly fractured people (played by Jennifer Lawrence, Bradley Cooper, and Robert De Niro most recently) as opposed to abstract under-the-microscope looks at existentialism. I prefer the latter, but a lot of film fans seem to be on board with the former. Joy looks like a blend of the two, so here’s hoping the movie is a return to form of sorts for the director.

If the trailer didn’t give you enough, here’s a plot synopsis for Joy:

JOY is the wild story of a family across four generations centered on the girl who becomes the woman who founds a business dynasty and becomes a matriarch in her own right. Betrayal, treachery, the loss of innocence and the scars of love, pave the road in this intense emotional and human comedy about becoming a true boss of family and enterprise facing a world of unforgiving commerce. Allies become adversaries and adversaries become allies, both inside and outside the family, as Joy’s inner life and fierce imagination carry her through the storm she faces.

Joy stars Jennifer Lawrence, Bradley Cooper, Robert De Niro, Edgar Ramirez, Drena De Niro, Virginia Madsen, Isabella Rossellini, and Dianne Ladd. The movie hits theaters this winter on December 25, 2015, putting it right there with a few other highly-anticipated films (The Revenant, Star Wars).
