Krampus trailer brings the terror back to Christmas

Director Michael Dougherty is following up his modern classic Halloween anthology Trick ‘r Treat with Krampus, the upcoming Christmas horror movie, and the first trailer for the highly anticipated film has finally arrived. I suppose the pre-Christmas season is in full movie swing, with this and The Night Before already making waves. Krampus looks like an entertaining blend of old school horror (which Dougherty does well) and holiday tradition (a movie genre Dougherty is casually stamping his mark across), and the mix is one we don’t get enough of. Back in the day, Christmas horror movies were almost a staple, so it’s nice to see Krampus digging into some mythology madness to bring us something fun.

Loved Trick ‘r Treat or call yourself a sucker for holiday horror? Check out the first trailer and poster for Krampus after the jump.

Not bad, right? Krampus teases some fun practical effects and traditional scares, and just like Trick ‘r Treat (Dougherty’s going to have a hard time distancing himself from that one) the movie seems to be pretty self-aware and enjoyably silly in its sincerity. Updating old myths and bringing legendary traditions back to life takes a fine blade to not come across as overdone and unnecessary, and Dougherty is doing a good job cutting his way through to film fans. I’ll definitely be seeing this one this holiday season.

In case you’re unfamiliar with the myth or didn’t get enough from the trailer, here’s a plot synopsis for Krampus to fill you in:

When his dysfunctional family clashes over the holidays, young Max is disillusioned and turns his back on Christmas. Little does he know, this lack of festive spirit has unleashed the wrath of Krampus: a demonic force of ancient evil intent on punishing non-believers. All hell breaks loose as beloved holiday icons take on a monstrous life of their own, laying siege to the fractured family’s home and forcing them to fight for each other if they hope to survive.

Krampus stars Adam Scott, Toni Collette, David Koechner, Conchata Ferrell, Stefania Owen, Allison Tolman, and Emjay Anthony. The movie makes its way to theaters on December 4, 2015.
