Jeff Bridges hunts witches in the trailer for Seventh Son

When the whisper of a Seventh Son movie was first uttered a while back, and that Jeff Bridges and Julianne Moore were attached, it was exciting to think of what a film version of Orson Scott Card’s novel could become. In actuality the movie turned out to be based on a completely different YA series called The Wardstone Chronicles (The Spook’s Apprentice in the UK) by Joseph Delaney, and a trailer is now available to show oblivious onlookers like myself what the difference is. Looks to be dragons, demons, gollums, magic, and a mumbling, sword-wielding witch hunter and his young companion. Could be fun!

Check out the trailer after the jump.

The film appears to have a slight Snow White and the Hunstman vibe going on, and based on the number of books as source material (all 13 of The Spook’s Books) it’s likely we could be getting a few sequels before long if this one is successful.

Here’s an official synopsis for Seventh Son:

In a time long past, an evil is about to be unleashed that will reignite the war between the forces of the supernatural and humankind once more. Master Gregory  (Bridges), the last of the Falcon Knights, had imprisoned the malevolently powerful witch, Mother Malkin  (Moore), many years ago. But now she has escaped and is seeking vengeance. Summoning her followers of every incarnation, Mother Malkin is preparing to unleash her terrible wrath on an unsuspecting world. Only one thing stands in her way: Master Gregory.

In a deadly reunion, Gregory comes face to face with the evil he always feared would someday return. He has only until the next full moon to do what usually takes years: train his new apprentice, Tom Ward (Ben Barnes) to fight a dark magic unlike any other. Man’s only hope lies in the seventh son of a seventh son.

Seventh Son hits theaters on January 17th, 2014 and stars Jeff Bridges, Julianne Moore, Kit Harington, Djimon Hounsou, Ben Barnes, Antje Traue, Olivia Williams, and Jason Scott Lee.

  1. Fun fact: it’s not supposed to be sword and sandals. It’s not even supposed to be a full on action story.
The book is an adventure/horror themed book that this trailer just absolutely shits on.

    1. Thanks for the comment, and sorry for the delay. I actually thought this movie was an adaptation of the Orson Scott Card novel series, so this trailer kind of surprised me. We’ll see how it turns out, right?

      1. Not to mention, in the book they don’t even use swords. Just staves, silver, salt and iron.
