Star Trek Beyond trailer is boldly rocking the Beastie Boys again

The first trailer for Star Trek Beyond flew in a while back (forgive me for playing catch-up), and the movie looks like an exciting turn into familiar territory made new again. The third movie in the franchise J. J. Abrams rebooted, Beyond brings us a new villain and a new adventure.

Watch the first trailer for Star Trek Beyond after the jump.

It’s short, but the trailer manages to establish a fast and furious tone (see what I did there) that’s at once upbeat and strangely curious. Star Trek Beyond has Fast and Furious director Justin Lin behind the camera, and we’re sure to see plenty of his flair on display. Plus, it looks like the Enterprise has gone down, and this might be the first movie in the new franchise in which we see the crew on an actual away mission (even if it’s forced due to a downed ship).

Also, lots of viewers/critics are panning the trailer for its use of the Beastie Boys, but I think it’s pretty great. Plus, didn’t young Kirk rock some Beastie Boys in the first film when he was stealing/wrecking his step-dad’s car? I like it.

Unfortunately, and surprisingly, there’s not an official plot synopsis available for Star Trek Beyond yet, but bits and pieces of plot details have been leaking out here and there. Most recently, but not central to the story, we learned that John Cho’s Sulu has a daughter waiting back home for him. Whether you’re a fan of the franchise or simply want to see what direction a new movie heads under the helm of Justin Lin, Beyond looks like it could be a fun ride into uncharted territory.

Star Trek Beyond stars Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Simon Pegg, John Cho, Anton Yelchin, Zoe Saldana, Karl Urban, Sofia Boutella, and Idris Elba. You can catch it in theaters later this summer on July 22, 2016.
