Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles teaser trailer tries being fearsome

The Michael Bay-produced & Jonathan Liebesman-directed Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles live-action reboot has kept a lot of people curious for a long time, and today we finally get a clearer look at the fearsome fighting team through the film’s first teaser trailer. Strangely, or maybe not so much, the trailer gives off a little bit of a G. I. Joe movie vibe, and the final shot is just….odd. Absent is Splinter, Will Arnett’s Vernon Fenwick, and a fully-armored Shredder/William Fichtner, but we do see quick glimpses of Leonardo, Michelangelo, Donatello, and Raphael. Oh yeah, we’ve also got Megan Fox as April O’Neil to look forward to, so there’s that.

Mutate your memories a bit, and watch the first teaser trailer for 2014’s Teenage Ninja Mutant Turtles after the jump.

Given the big Nickelodeon Movies logo before the trailer began, I’m sure this is going to be aimed at kids as much as nostalgia-hungry adults, which is always a mixed bag. The design of the turtles is definitely grittier, but when Michelangelo pulled his mask off the first thing that popped into my head was Aliens in the Attic for some reason.

We’ll probably see a full-length trailer surface before long, but in the meantime here’s a synopsis giving us a little more detail:

The city needs heroes. Darkness has settled over New York City as Shredder and his evil Foot Clan have an iron grip on everything from the police to the politicians. The future is grim until four unlikely outcast brothers rise from the sewers and discover their destiny as Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. The Turtles must work with fearless reporter April and her wise-cracking cameraman Vern Fenwick to save the city and unravel Shredder’s diabolical plan.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles stars Alan Ritchson, Noel Fisher, Pete Ploszek, and Jeremy Howard as the heroes in a half shell as well as Megan Fox, Will Arnett, William Fichtner, Danny Woodburn, and Abby Elliot. It’s scheduled to hit theaters August 8th, 2014.
