The 33 trailer sees Antonio Banderas buried in a Chilean mine

The 33 is an English-language Chilean movie about the 33 miners in Chile who were trapped underground for over two months after a cave in in 2010. The true story and rescue attempt captured media and national audience attention for the duration, and the upcoming movie detailing the events looks like a heartfelt story of survival. Antonio Banderas leads the cast as Mario “Super Mario” Sepulveda, the man who sent videos up to rescuers letting them know how the survivors were doing. With this and the recent Everest movie, real-life dramatic heroism films may be making a comeback, which would be great. Inventing heroic arcs and stories of human sacrifice is one thing. Retelling the real thing on the big screen is another.

My brother was on his religious mission in Chile when the cave in happened, and he sent me a picture of the capsule (which toured around after the rescue) used to hoist these guys over 2,000 feet from underground. It was tiny, and that slow climb to freedom must have been wild.

If you didn’t follow the story as it unfolded on the news, here’s a plot synopsis for The 33 that fills in some details:

In 2010, the eyes of the world turned to Chile, where 33 miners had been buried alive by the catastrophic explosion and collapse of a 100-year-old gold and copper mine. Over the next 69 days, an international team worked night and day in a desperate attempt to rescue the trapped men as their families and friends, as well as millions of people globally, waited and watched anxiously for any sign of hope. But 200 stories beneath the surface, in the suffocating heat and with tensions rising, provisions—and time—were quickly running out.

The 33 stars Antonio Banderas, Lou Diamond Phillips, Gabriel Byrne, Rodrigo Santoro, Juliette Binoche, and James Brolin. The movie sees theatrical release on November 13, 2015.
