The Big Short sees all-star cast caught up in housing crisis

Out of nowhere, the first trailer for The Big Short, Adam McKay’s first directorial drama, has made big waves in the movie world this week. Granted, tagging the names and talents of Brad Pitt, Christian Bale, Ryan Gosling, and Steve Carrell to any project means almost-instant eyes on, but everything about The Big Short is curiously enticing. From Gosling’s super-dark hair, Bale’s laid back appearance, McKay’s involvement as a director, and the fact that the movie is based on a book by the author behind hits like Moneyball and The Blindside, everything in the mix teases something strange. The movie and the book its crafted upon deal with the housing crisis and financial collapse in the late 2000’s, so get ready for a lot of familiar faces talking big money.

Again, what a cast, right? Everyone seems to be doing something a little outside of their box, but the movie looks pretty straightforward. I haven’t read The Big Short: Inside the Doomsday Machine by Michael Lewis, and I’m not completely on board with Adam McKay (Anchorman, Step Brothers) turning his trade to drama, but I’m definitely intrigued by what we’re seeing. Who knows. Maybe this will be a new page in the director’s career and open up some different doors.

Here’s a quick plot synopsis for The Big Short:

When four outsiders saw what the big banks, media and government refused to, the global collapse of the economy, they had an idea:  The Big Short. Their bold investment leads them into the dark underbelly of modern banking where they must question everyone and everything

The Big Short stars Brad Pitt, Christian Bale, Ryan Gosling, Steve Carrell, Karen Gillan, Melissa Leo, Marisa Tomei, Hamish Linklater, and Selena Gomez. The movie opens in limited release on December 11th and then wider on December 23, 2015.
