The Zero Theorem trailer teases transcendence through technology

Terry Gilliam is coming back to the big screen with The Zero Theorem, his first full-length film since 2009’s The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus. Can you believe that was five years ago? The movie has all the patches you’d expect to find in a Gilliam quilt:  vibrant colors, a fantastical fantasy world, scary science, and a lust to escape the pain of existence.

It looks bold and beautiful, and if you’re a fan of Gilliam or Christoph Waltz (Inglourious Basterds, Django Unchained) you owe it to yourself to check out the first official trailer after the jump.

Bits and pieces of previous Terry Gilliam films can be seen throughout the trailer – a bit of the Imaginarium here, some Brazil and Time Bandits there – and it will be exciting to see another strange world on display from the visionary director. Add the acting chops of Waltz, and a mysterious Zero Theorem that feels reminiscent of Darren Aronofsky’s Pi, and it’s hard to not look forward to the film’s release.

In the meantime, here’s a synopsis for The Zero Theorem:

An eccentric and reclusive computer genius plagued with existential angst works on a mysterious project aimed at discovering the purpose of existence – or the lack thereof -once and for all. However, it is only once he experiences the power of love and desire that he is able to understand his very reason for being.

The Zero Theorem stars Christoph Waltz, Tilda Swinton, Ben Whishaw, Matt Damon, David Thewlis, Melanie Thierry, and Lucas Hedges. Unfortunately, the movie doesn’t have a US release date yet, but chances are it’ll see the big screen before long.
