First Warcraft trailer finally previews game-to-film adaptation

Warcraft, the movie not the video games, has been quietly teasing itself through director Duncan Jones‘s confidence about the project and snippets of character details here and there. The movie finally has a trailer to show us more than we’ve seen to date, and it’s a doozy. Some sites are commenting on the cartoonish orcs, others on the stretch it’s going to take to establish the lore. Regardless of what’s being said, the trailer makes Warcraft look like an adventure. I loved the original PC games, gave World of Warcraft a try during college but quickly quit, and I’m ready to see what Jones (Moon, Source Code) has put together.

I was out of town for the weekend, but I had to catch up and share this one since it made a splash on Friday. Watch the first trailer and check out a few posters for Warcraft after the jump.

Maybe it’s because I’m not a die-hard fan of the property or because I jumped on the Duncan Jones bandwagon after Moon, but I’m pretty excited to see this on the big screen. It looks like a new epic we can sink out teeth into, and the CGI is…intriguing, to say the least. I read a Warcraft book years ago that focused on an orc trying to find redemption and becoming a hero for his people, and it’s nice to see orcs getting their share of the story in the movie. From what I understand, Jones insisted it be split in terms of attention when the studio/initial script called for the film to be mostly about the humans. It’ll be cool to see those big green guys emoting, and here’s hoping Warcraft will set itself apart from the sub-par game-to-movie adaptations of the past.

Here’s the official plot synopsis for Warcraft to fill in those who aren’t familiar with the games:

The peaceful realm of Azeroth stands on the brink of war as its civilization faces a fearsome race of invaders: Orc warriors fleeing their dying home to colonize another. As a portal opens to connect the two worlds, one army faces destruction and the other faces extinction. From opposing sides, two heroes are set on a collision course that will decide the fate of their family, their people and their home. So begins a spectacular saga of power and sacrifice in which war has many faces, and everyone fights for something.

Warcraft stars Travis Fimmel, Dominic Cooper, Ben Foster, Paula Patton, Clancy Brown, Toby Kebbell, Robert Kazinsky, Ruth Negga, and Daniel Wu. Catch it in theaters next year on June 10, 2016.
