X-Men: Apocalypse trailer teases the villain and his horsemen

X-Men: Apocalypse finally has a trailer, not to be left behind by this month’s big teaser releases, and Bryan Singer’s fourth mutant movie continues to rebuild and re-imagine the world Singer helped create way back in 2000. Maybe it’s just me, but the X-Men franchise hasn’t been as exciting or in-your-face as most of the other superhero fodder recently, but that could be a good thing.

Watch the first X-Men: Apocalypse trailer, read a plot synopsis, and check out the first poster for the movie after the jump.

I’m a little late to the draw in terms of posting the trailer, but it’s worth the watch if you’re a fan of the franchise or familiar with the journey the X-Men have taken on screen up to this point.

As for me, I’m curious, to say the least. For one, Oscar Isaac is a talented guy, and it looks like Apocalypse (the character and the movie) is a chance for him to let loose behind the costume. Here’s hoping his villain is a little more than paint-by-numbers. I’m also curious to see the new/old mutants as played by younger actors. It could be argued that Sophie Turner (Jean Grey), Kodi Smit-McPhee (Nightcrawler), and Tye Sheridan (Cyclops) are up-and-coming talent worth watching, and it’ll be interesting to see them embody mutants we know and love. And then there’s the new good ol’ gang of Magneto, Mystique, and Xavier. Each are still trying to find their place, and it even seems like Mageneto may go the Hawkeye/mind control route this movie, so that dynamic could be worth exploring.

For those like me who aren’t familiar with the comic book storylines and origins, here’s a plot synopsis for X-Men: Apocalypse to fill us in:

Since the dawn of civilization, he was worshipped as a god. Apocalypse, the first and most powerful mutant from Marvel’s X-Men universe, amassed the powers of many other mutants, becoming immortal and invincible. Upon awakening after thousands of years, he is disillusioned with the world as he finds it and recruits a team of powerful mutants, including a disheartened Magneto, to cleanse mankind and create a new world order, over which he will reign. As the fate of the Earth hangs in the balance, Raven with the help of Professor X must lead a team of young X-Men to stop their greatest nemesis and save mankind from complete destruction.

X-Men: Apocalypse is bursting with recognizable names and stars Michael Fassbender, James McAvoy, Jennifer Lawrence, Nicholas Hoult, Evan Peters, Kodi Smit-McPhee, Sophie Turner, Tye Sheridan, Oscar Isaac, Rose Byrne, Olivia Munn, Lucas Till, Josh Helman, and a few more new faces in familiar shoes. The movie makes its way to theaters May 27, 2016.
