Trailers for Life preview alien specimen thriller starring Gyllenhaal and Reynolds

Life looks like it’s a movie that will continue the trend of yearly space disaster A-list blockbusters, and the first trailers (official and international) preview a thriller on the International Space Station starring a few familiar faces. Jake Gyllenhaal, Rebecca Ferguson (Mission:Impossible – Rogue Nation), and Ryan Reynolds headline what looks like a mix of Ridley Scott’s Alien and John Carpenter’s The Thing, both movies that are now cult classics, so here’s hoping Life is more than a flavor-of-the-year sci-fi film. Personally, I’m surprised to see the movie’s two big names (Gyllenhaal and Reynolds) involved in this type of project, especially if it’s not something special. I’m curious, to say the least, and Life shows promise. We’ll have to wait until late spring 2017 to check it out.

Here’s the “official” first trailer for Life:

And here’s the “official international” trailer that was also released today:

What do you think? Alien spores from Mars? The Thing in space? Biological Earth experiments gone wrong? There are already theories floating around regarding the movie’s plot, but on the surface it looks like a specimen is found and experiments are conducted. Again, there’s potential here, and I enjoy the talent involved, so I’m hopeful. Director Daniel Espinosa (Safe House, Child 44) has neither blown away critics nor given them reason to hate his work, and Life could be another solid entry on his resume.

In case the trailers weren’t enough to peak your curiosity, here’s a plot synopsis for Life:

Life tells the story of the six-member crew of the International Space Station that is on the cutting edge of one of the most important discoveries in human history: the first evidence of extraterrestrial life on Mars. As the crew begins to conduct research, their methods end up having unintended consequences and the life form proves more intelligent than anyone ever expected.

Life stars Jake Gyllenhaal, Rebecca Ferguson, Ryan Reynolds, Hiroyuki Sanada, Ariyon Bakare, Alexandre Nguyen, and Olga Dihovichnaya. The movie hits theaters May 26, 2017.
