Boyle’s trademark madness is back with first T2: Trainspotting trailer

T2: Trainspotting hits theaters early next year, and the first trailer for the highly anticipated sequel to Danny Boyle’s heroine staple looks good. Really good. Twenty years ago Boyle brought Irvine Welsh’s novel (Trainspotting) to life in glorious fashion, and twenty years later the director aims to do the same with another from the novelist. T2: Trainspotting is inspired by Welsh’s book Porno, and the trailer hints at a hilarious, violent, drug-fueled reunion for Renton and his pals/enemies. Personally, the first trailer is enough to ensure my ticket when the movie lands in theaters next spring, and I’m excited to see where these characters have been and where they’re going under Boyle’s direction. Sex, drugs, and drama are on the menu, that’s for sure.

Watch the first trailer for T2: Trainspotting and read a poetic plot synopsis for the movie after the jump.

Now that’s the Danny Boyle I’ve been missing! Don’t get me wrong, the man’s genre adventures are always above-par, but there’s a certain sense of dirty, druggy misadventure missing in his Oscar bait films. T2 (do we really have to call it that?) looks like Boyle’s chance to let loose a little with characters that he introduced to the screen two decades ago. That said, I wouldn’t be surprised if, after Trainspotting has its run, the director tries to wow the Oscar crowd again after learning a thing or two from Steve Jobs. For now, let’s have a blast with the Trainspotting gang!

It’s not the on-paper plot paragraph that made Trainspotting the masterpiece it was, so an official plot for T2: Trainspotting isn’t going to set the bar for the sequel. Regardless, here’s the plot synopsis that’s floating around attached to the new trailer:

First there was an opportunity……then there was a betrayal.

Twenty years have gone by.
Much has changed but just as much remains the same.
Mark Renton returns to the only place he can ever call home.

They are waiting for him: Spud, Sick Boy, and Begbie.

Other old friends are waiting too: sorrow, loss, joy, vengeance, hatred, friendship, love, longing, fear, regret, diamorphine, self-destruction and mortal danger, they are all lined up to welcome him, ready to join the dance.

T2: Trainspotting stars Ewan McGregor, Jonny Lee Miller, Robert Carlyle, Ewen BremnerKelly Macdonald, Simon Weir, Shirley Henderson, and Irvine Welsh. The movie hits theaters on February 3, 2017.
