The Wall trailer teases a stuck-in-a-bad-spot war drama

The Wall appears to be a one-location thriller/drama set somewhere in the Middle East and starring Aaron Taylor-Johnson and John Cena. From the trailer, it looks like a very small-but-tense film, with most of the action taking place in a small plot of desert as the pair of soldiers get pinned down by sniper fire. Personally, I think this could be pretty great as a bottle film, but it could also be a drawn out affair that gets bogged down by the setting and predicament. Can we call it a game of cat and mouse? Taylor-Johnson appears to be piecing together a mystery as the film progresses, slowly realizing he and Cena are alone with no help. The sniper pinning them down has them dead-to-rights, even going so far as to start taunting them via radio. Again, The Wall could be a nice little war thriller focusing on character over explosions and armies facing off in large numbers. Here’s hoping it’s worth the watch.

Check out the first trailer and read a plot synopsis for The Wall after the jump.

There’s so little going on here that it’s hard to judge based on the trailer alone, but the scenario is at least laid out in a straightforward fashion. Cena gets shots, Taylor-Johnson gets pinned down trying to save him, and the game of cat and mouse begins. Cena can be hit-or-miss, but for the most part Taylor-Johnson is solid.  Plus, director Doug Liman has a pretty strong resume regarding enjoyable movies that sound kind of silly. We don’t get “small” films like this often, so I’m optimistic.

If the trailer wasn’t enough, here’s the official plot synopsis for The Wall:

“The Wall” follows two soldiers pinned down by an Iraqi sniper, with nothing but a crumbling wall between them. Their fight becomes as much a battle of will and wits as it is of lethally accurate marksmanship.

The Wall was directed by Doug Liman (Edge of Tomorrow, Mr. and Mrs. Smith) and stars Aaron Taylor-JohnsonJohn Cena, and Laith Nakli. The movie is scheduled for release on March 10, 2017.
