First FREE FIRE trailers preview Ben Wheatley’s funny freaky shoot ’em up bottle movie

Free Fire trailers see A-list stars shooting each other

Free Fire flew in under my radar somehow, and the first trailers for the movie make it look like a must-watch. Seriously, how did I not know this movie was on its way? It looks like the lovechild of early Guy Ritchie and Quentin Tarantino films, and Free Fire is receiving a lot of praise after it’s recent Toronto Film Festival debut. I’m sold. We don’t get enough of this kind of movie, and if the trailers are any indication, this thing is 90 minutes of awesome. The talent involved, the apparent premise, and all the whacky in-betweens make for a nice little package, and I’m ready to unwrap it in theaters sometime next year!

(Review) HARDCORE HENRY is jarring, silly, and wildly entertaining

hardcore henry movie review 2016

Hardcore Henry is the video game movie we’ve been waiting for

Hardcore Henry started out as a wild little Indiegogo project way back in 2014, originally titled Hardcore, and now it’s secured distribution and finally made its way to theaters. I’ve watched this ambitious little monster since the Indigogo project was in the funding stages, and I managed to catch an early screening of Hardcore Henry just before it hit theaters last week. It’s been kind of exciting seeing a movie grow and evolve to widespread release, and I couldn’t resist writing up a review.

Hardcore Henry is wildly entertaining (for the right crowd), more than a little jarring, super violent, and surprisingly hilarious. It’s probably the best Universal Soldier remake we can ever hope for, and you can read my review of the movie after the jump.

HARDCORE full-length trailer from TIFF shows more first-person shooter movie immersion

Hardcore trailer puts viewer in first-person perspective

The ambitious first-person feature film Hardcore finally got a full-length trailer to turn heads and blow people’s minds. The movie plays like a video game, completely in first-person perspective, which is a mixed bag. On one hand, in an era where gaming has skyrocketed in popularity, and celebrities are being made from streamable viewing, Hardcore may have a built-in audience ready to eat up the madness. On the other hand, shaky cam can be tough to handle in excess, and I imagine sitting through an entire movie of first-person jumping, running, shooting, tumbling, and falling might be a bit taxing on the viewer. Imagine watching Hardcore on a VR headset like the Oculus Rift? Pretty wild, right? The movie stars Sharlto Copley in various roles, and the trailer is a good glimpse of what we’re going to get.

First CHAPPIE trailer introduces the world and wonder of Neill Blomkamp’s latest

chappie trailer header

Chappie trailer teases newest in robot transcendence trend

It seems like there’s been an uptrend lately in robotic revolution movies (Automata, Ex Machina), and the latest to join the hit-or-miss genre is Neill Blomkamp’s Chappie. The movie has been billed as a comedy, but the first trailer for Chappie paints it as something much bigger. Coming from the director of District 9 and Elysium, and with an artificial protagonist voiced by long-time Blomkamp collaborator Sharlto Copley, the movie looks like it’s aiming to inject a little heart into what’s become a paint-by-numbers sci-fi concept.

First footage from HARDCORE brings first person shooters to life with Sharlto Copley

sharlto copley hardcore teaser

Sharlto Copley stars in first ever POV movie Hardcore

It’s finally happening. The line between video games and movies is being blurred in a big way, and the first footage from the film Hardcore starring Sharlto Copley (District 9, The A-Team) drops us in the middle of the world’s first POV big screen experience. It’s not uncommon for games to use real-world footage to enhance gameplay, so the concept isn’t a new one, but what’s going on here is essentially a live-action video game movie. The objective is spelled out quickly as the footage begins, and we fill the shoes of the player/protagonist as he shoots, grenades, leaps, and rolls through a multi-level building.

You have to see it to truly understand, so watch the first footage for Hardcore, and find out how to donate to the film’s Indiegogo campaign, after the jump.
