Boyhood finally gets a trailer after twelve years of filming

Richard Linklater (Dazed and Confused, A Scanner Darkly) is a creative filmmaker whose movies have traditionally done their wowing subtly outside the flow of mainstream cinema. His quietly developing new project is a movie titled Boyhood, and Linklater has been capturing moments and crafting a story around his protagonist who has grown up on camera over the last twelve years. The first trailer for Boyhood previews what appears to be your typical coming-of-age tale of childhood exploration on into adolescence and adulthood, and it’s unclear why Linklater and crew would film one person over twelve years as opposed to going the traditional route of casting look-a-like actors at various stages of their lives.

That said, the project is ambitious to say the least. You can watch the first trailer for Boyhood after the jump.

Again, there’s not really anything here that seems out of the norm for your typical long-running television show or coming-of-age movie, so it’ll be interesting to see how the film turns out.

Here’s a synopsis for Boyhood that focuses as much on the twelve year filming aspect as it does the soundtrack and story:

Filmed over 12 years with the same cast, Richard Linklater’s BOYHOOD is a groundbreaking story of growing up as seen through the eyes of a child named Mason (a breakthrough performance by Ellar Coltrane), who literally grows up on screen before our eyes. Starring Ethan Hawke and Patricia Arquette as Mason’s parents and newcomer Lorelei Linklater as his sister Samantha, BOYHOOD charts the rocky terrain of childhood like no other film has before. Snapshots of adolescence from road trips and family dinners to birthdays and graduations and all the moments in between become transcendent, set to a soundtrack spanning the years from Coldplay’s Yellow to Arcade Fire’s Deep Blue. BOYHOOD is both a nostalgic time capsule of the recent past and an ode to growing up and parenting. It’s impossible to watch Mason and his family without thinking about our own journey.

Boyhood stars Ellar Coltrane, Patricia Arquette, Ethan Hawke, Lorelei Linklater, and Evie Thompson. It’s scheduled for limited theatrical release on July 11th.
