The Rover trailer promises end-of-the-world drama worth watching

The first trailer for the Guy Pearce and Robert Pattinson-starring film The Rover debuted a little while back, but it got buried before I had time to post it up. That said, the trailer makes the film look like an atmospheric end-of-the-world drama, and I imagine this is what could have happened decades before the events of The Book of Eli. Only 10 years after society has crumbled, Pearce and Pattinson struggle to survive the ins and outs of other people’s violence and disregard. The film looks really good, and coming from the director of Animal Kingdom (David Michod) we’re bound to be immersed in something special.

Watch the first trailer for The Rover, and check out a few posters, after the jump.

Once again, the trailer sets a strong atmospheric tone that’s as equally on edge as it is and sullen. It’s great to see Pattinson continue to step away from his Twilight stigma, and this film could be really good for the guy. As usual, Pearce appears to be eating up the scenery very nicely. This movie’s definitely on my watch list.

Here’s a plot synopsis for The Rover:

THE ROVER, David Michod’s highly anticipated follow-up to ANIMAL KINGDOM, is set in a world 10 years following the collapse of society. The rule of the law has disintegrated and life is cheap. The film follows hardened loner Eric (Pearce) as he travels the desolate towns and roads of the outback. When a gang of thieves steals his car they leave behind a wounded Rey (Pattinson) in their wake. Forcing Rey to help track the gang, Eric will go to any lengths to take back the one thing that still matters to him. Michod also wrote the film based on a story he conceived with Joel Edgerton.

The Rover stars Guy Pearce, Robert Pattinson, Scoot McNairy, Anthony Hayes, and David Field. The film will make its debut at this year’s Cannes Film Festival, and then it’s set to see theaters in New York and Las Angeles on June 13th with a wider release on June 20th. Mark your calendars.
