Michael Fassbender is a disturbed musician in first Frank trailer

See that funny lookin’ fella up above in the big fake head? That’s Michael Fassbender (Prometheus, Shame) under there, and the first trailer for his upcoming movie Frank was released the other day. The film looks like an instant indie hit, with a cooky cast and an intriguing concept, and putting on the mask may give Fassbender a chance to act out a bit and have some fun. Having him describe his facial features is good for a laugh at least, and there’s most likely a lot of heart and adventure under the surface.

Watch the interesting new trailer for Frank after the jump.

“Flattered grin followed by bashful half smile” sums up how the trailer makes you feel, and “I have a certificate” sounds like an excellent line to give the ticket taker when going to see the film. Everyone seems to be having a good time here, and, once again, I’m sure there’s a lot of emotional resonance and discovery along the way.

Here’s a synopsis and a bit of backstory for Frank:

Acclaimed Irish director Lenny Abrahamson follows up his award-winning films Adam & Paul, Garage and What Richard Did with an offbeat comedy about a young wannabe musician, Jon (Domhnall Gleeson), who finds himself out of his depth when he joins an avant-garde pop band led by the mysterious and enigmatic Frank (Michael Fassbender), a musical genius who hides himself inside a large fake head, and his terrifying bandmate Clara (Maggie Gyllenhaal).

Written by Jon Ronson (The Men Who Stare At Goats) and Peter Straughan (Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, The Men Who Stare At Goats), FRANK is based on the memoir by Jon Ronson. It is a fictional story loosely inspired by Frank Sidebottom, the persona of cult musician and comedy legend Chris Sievey, as well as other outsider musicians like Daniel Johnston and Captain Beefheart.

Frank stars Michael Fassbender, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Domhnall Gleeson, and Scoot McNairy. It’s scheduled for a UK release on May 5th and currently doesn’t have a US release date, but I’ll be keeping my eye on this one.
