Michael Fassbender goes full Spanish Inquisition badass in new Assassin’s Creed trailer

The first trailer for Assassin’s Creed was unfortunately backgrounded by a misplaced Kanye West song, but for the most part it did its job to intrigue moviegoers and re-spark the “will this break the video game adaptation curse” discussion. Any blockbuster with a few familiar faces and a hint of talent behind the camera attracts attention as “the one” that will prove video games are worthwhile investment properties that can be turned into exceptional films. Is Assassin’s Creed that movie? We’ll have to wait and see, but the answer is always subjective. The second official full-length trailer for the movie was just released, and it includes more assassin action and storyline groundwork. Overall, things are looking good for Assassin’s Creed. At least the second trailer doesn’t soil itself with Kanye in the background.

I know there are diehard Assassin’s Creed fans out there. Personally, I enjoyed the first couple games, was drawn back by the siren song of pirates and ship sailing in Assassin’s Creed 4, and have since fallen off the bandwagon. That said, I’ve been a long-time fan of Fassbender, and he continues to have fun with his role choices (Frank, Slow West) when he’s not raking in the big bucks with the blockbusters. Here, he’s got a solid director behind the camera and plenty of strong supporting cast members, so let’s hope Assassin’s Creed treats him better than his first video game adaptation appearance in Jonah Hex did. This trailer made it seem like Fassbender’s character was (at first) a Snake Plissken archetype – criminal badass who has to work for “the man” for his freedom. Escape from the Spanish Inquisition, anyone?

If you’re not familiar with the video games the movie is inspired by, here’s the plot synopsis for the Assassin’s Creed movie:

Callum discovers he is descended from a mysterious secret society, the Assassins, and amasses incredible knowledge and skills to take on the oppressive and powerful Templar organization in the present day.

Assassin’s Creed stars Michael FassbenderMarion CotillardMichael K. Williams, Jeremy IronsBrendan GleesonBrian Gleeson, and Callum Turner. The movie is directed by Justin Kurzel (Macbeth, The Snowtown Murders) and hits theaters on December 21, 2016.
