Punks will be punks in first full-length Punk’s Dead trailer

I’ve been following Punk’s Dead (SLC Punk 2) since it was a wee Kickstarter project, through its first tease of a trailer, and now we’ve finally arrived at a full-length NSFW trailer previewing the punk antics to come. I grew up watching SLC Punk!, living in the featured Satan-fearing state of Wyoming, so it’s been interesting to see how the sequel has evolved. The brand new trailer for the film features Heroin Bob’s son, Ross, traveling his own random roads around SLC and navigating the woes and wonders of love, liquor, mushrooms, music, and connecting with his friends and family. The trailer starts off a little rocky, but as it moves along it sets an intriguing tone while weaving in new and old characters alike.

Watch the new, full-length NSFW (for language) trailer for Punk’s Dead after the jump.

Watching the trailer for the first time, and seeing Ross in almost the exact same seeing-your-girl-with-another-guy sort of situation as Stevo, I had mixed feelings. The forced sequel moment outweighed the nostalgia for a minute, but then I realized this isn’t a story about hardened punks who know the ropes and brawl for pleasure. It’s a story about a young dude who doesn’t quite know his place in a sea of stereotypes (the trailer runs down a few in search of “gutter punks”), and Ross seems like the kind of kid who would pine, pout, and drink away his woes over losing a girl as opposed to immediately beating the hell out of someone. Maybe I’m wrong. Maybe Ross goes to town on that guy we see macking on his girl in the trailer, but it doesn’t feel like he’s that kind of character. We’ll have to wait and see.

In the meantime, here’s the official plot synopsis for Punk’s Dead. It’s pretty ambiguous, but what can we expect from a movie about the meandering misadventures of young punks?

Punk’s Dead, the sequel to 1999 cult hit SLC Punk, is a punk romp through the Utah hinterlands. Ross, Penny and Crash, young outsiders from different tribes, embark on a road trip to a huge punk show. Ross, 19, is the love child of Trish and Heroin Bob, who died before Ross was born. During their odyssey, and with the help of a healthy dose of drugs, alcohol and punk music, Ross shreds his darkly Gothic outlook and embraces life. His mother Trish, who raised Ross alone in her steam punk shop, discovers that he is in a crisis. She recruits his ‘uncles,’ Bob’s old SLC gang, to help find him. When all collide at the concert, they are forced to deal with their unresolved relationships with Bob.

Punk’s Dead sees the return of Devon Sawa, James Duval, Adam Pascal, and Michael A. Goorjian reprising their respective roles (with Sarah Clarke stepping in to play Trish), and a new generation of young deviants is represented by Ben Schnetzer, Hannah Marks, Machine Gun Kelly, and Emma Pace. The movie has yet to secure a release date, but keep your eyes open for more news as it surfaces.

  1. Anyone else really disappointed that Stevo is not in it at all? I mean, who do you think would be the most likely candidate to be Ross’ uncle, or be a close friend to Trish? Perhaps…Bob’s best friend, Stevo? I will still watch it, but will always be disappointed Matthew Lillard isn’t in it.

    1. Yeah, I know how you feel. There’s a comment on the Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/SLCPUNK2) that says he’s narrating, but I don’t know if that’s truth. I vaguely remember the director saying something about Stevo was him, and he moved on and out of SLC, and this story is about the people still there. So…we shall see!

    2. Punk’s Dead story happens in a day. Stevo never returned to Salt Lake and if we get to tell his story in SLC Punk 3 (we need a big budget but the script is written), he is totally out of the loop. Trish needs local and quick help on that day.

  2. Annabeth Gish played Trish in the first movie. Therefore, Sarah Clarke cannot return to reprise a roll she never played

    1. Yeah, I’ll definitely have to give it a watch. I want to see where they take the story and if Mark (Til Schweiger) shows up.
