The R.I.P.D. are the Men In Black/Ghostbusters of the afterlife

A trailer for R.I.P.D. recently surfaced showcasing Jeff Bridges and Ryan Reynolds as our new agents J and K. Reynolds seamlessly fits into Will Smith’s wise-cracking good-cop-gone-supernatural shoes while Bridges breathes a little life into the been-there-done-that seasoned partner archetype that Tommy Lee Jones deadpanned.

The new trailer feels like simply a change of scenery if you’ve seen the Men in Black films (which is unfortunately the comparison pretty much every movie-centric site is making). That said, the R.I.P.D. seems a bit livelier than their alien-tracking counterparts. Check out the trailer and a few bits of promotional material after the jump.

Whatya think? The stench of another series or two is definitely strong, but Reynolds and Bridges may help elevate the material beyond sub-par action and adventure. That said, with a director like Robert Schwentke (Flightplan, Red, The Time Traveler’s Wife) we may be in for more of the same.

Here’s an synopsis for the film courtesy of MovieFone:

The Dark Horse comic R.I.P.D. is adapted by Universal Pictures with this fantasy crime film focusing on a newly deceased cop (Ryan Reynolds) who’s drafted into a squad of zombie cops that battle the supernatural. Red’s Robert Schwentke directs, with Jeff Bridges co-starring as his partner and Kevin Bacon playing the villain.

We don’t catch a glimpse of Kevin Bacon in the trailer, which is unfortunate, but he’s another name that could help the film. That said, Schwentke had an all-star cast at his disposal for Red and we’ve got evidence to see what he did with the actors he had.

All cynical skepticism aside, R.I.P.D. looks like it could be fun. The 3D road has been taken, so depending on your predisposition to the gimmick/tactic that may add another layer of enjoyment to the experience.
