Waterston and Kirby dive deep into frontier desire in first trailer for The World to Come

“Astonishment and joy” is 2021’s “I wish I knew how to quit you.” Calling it.

The first trailer for The World to Come paints a picture of forbidden love in the mid-1800s between two dissatisfied frontier wives.

Broad strokes say The World to Love could be pretty paint-by-numbers, but word out of the Venice Film Festival is very good. You be the judge when the movie hits theaters and on-demand in February and March, respectively.

On the surface, the movie seems straightforward. Two women, jaded and unsettled by their lives of little substance, fall madly and deeply in love. Naturally, the world around them doesn’t understand their love, and drama ensues.

Other movie sites are quick to point out that this trope-ish framework isn’t necessarily new, but The World to Come is attracting buzz in how it executes the narrative. Direction is everything.

Here’s the official plot synopsis for The World to Come:

In this powerful 19th century romance set in the American Northeast, Abigail, a farmer’s wife, and her new neighbor Tallie find themselves irrevocably drawn to each other. A grieving Abigail tends to her withdrawn husband Dyer as free-spirit Tallie bristles at the jealous control of her husband Finney, when together their intimacy begins to fill a void in each other’s lives they never knew existed. Directed by Mona Fastvold and scripted by Jim Shepard and Ron Hansen, THE WORLD TO COME explores how isolation is overcome by the intensity of human connection.

The World to Come stars Katherine Waterston, Vanessa Kirby, Casey Affleck, Christopher Abbott, and Karina Ziana Gherasim. The movie is scheduled for limited theatrical release on February 12, 2021 and wider on-demand release on March 2, 2021.
